At What Point Should You Hire Help?

May 30th, 2008 · 3 Comments · Uncategorized

I just got off the phone with a student of mine, Brian Haskins. I must say I’m pretty proud of him. He’s really taken off and hit the ground running with this whole short sale thing.

We were talking on the phone today and he started telling me that he recently hired an assistant to help him through some of the day to day “stuff” in his short sale business and it reminded me of when I struggled with that decision to hire help just a few short years ago.

He had some really good ideas and was willing to share them with me…

When we first started the conversation, I wasn’t recording it. Brian was telling me some really good stuff about how he just hired his first assistant to help him in his short sale business, and as he was talking I was thinking about how many other people out there are probably struggling with the decision to hire help (just as I did at one tie.)

So I asked him if I could call him back, interview the heck out of him, and this time, press the “record” button. He agreed. We talked for about 15 minutes, and it ended up being a very valuable conversation, so take a few minutes and check it out.

You might be interested to know that he hired this person and it costs him absolutely nothing out of his pocket.

Deciding when to hire someone was a tough thing for me to move forward with. I was really worried about how I was actually going to figure out how to pay this person. To be honest though, the more I was able to get away from the things in my business that were centered around my weaknesses, the more I was able to focus on my strenghts ONLY. I’m so used to having that help now that I don’t know what I would do without it.

There are parts of this business (just like ANY business) that I just don’t like to do. And my assistant really likes to do those things. (Many of my weaknesses are her strengths – and she LOVES to do these things!!)

But ultimately you need to decide when the time is right to hire someone new. Maybe listening to this interview will help put this into perspective for you…

Take a minute and listen here…

When you’re finished listening, share your thoughts by clicking below.  I’m interested in hearing what your opinion is about this.  What’s working for you?  Or have you not hired help yet because of some of the same reasons that we talked about on the call?  Let me know…

    Shaun,

EXCELLENT call, my friend. Concise but meaty.

As an avid proponent of outsourcing and out-tasking, I really enjoy hearing about the success people have by implimenting this into their businesses.

    Thanks for sharing, man!

Hey Bro… that was great interview. It’s another reason why NOT doing every part of this business actually allows you to serve MORE people and get more deals approved!
